A Commercial Developer’s Personal Perspective on the Paris Agreement

The only viable future is a sustainable one. Anything else is a recipe for disaster—economically, environmentally, and socially.

Let me introduce myself first, my name is Dirk-Jan Houben and I’m currently employed as a Commercial Project developer at Connecting Concepts B.V.. From a personal and jobwise point of view, I’ve come to believe that the only viable future is a sustainable one. Anything else is a recipe for disaster—economically, environmentally, and socially. My journey to this conviction has been shaped by my education, professional experiences, science, data, and, most profoundly, my role as a parent.

The Evolution of a Sustainable Mindset

My commitment to sustainability grew alongside my academic journey, which began at MBO and culminated with university studies in the Netherlands. Along the way, I gained a deeper understanding of the intricate balance required to sustain our world. A former colleague once jokingly called me the “Green Khmer” because of my relentless advocacy for environmental responsibility. What began as an interest turned into a mission when I became a father.

Parenthood has a way of sharpening priorities. At the Purpose Day event, I was confronted with the stark, scientifically proven state of our planet. Seeing the challenges that future generations, including my own children, will face was a wake-up call. It became clear to me that sustainability is not just a professional focus—it’s a personal responsibility.

People, Planet, and Profit: An Inseparable Triad

In real estate development, the mantra of “People, Planet, and Profit” is often touted, but its true importance cannot be overstated. These three elements are deeply interconnected, and if we lose one, we jeopardize them all. Prioritizing only profit at the expense of people and the planet leads to short-term gains but long-term devastation. Conversely, neglecting economic viability renders even the most altruistic environmental or social efforts unsustainable.

To foster all three pillars effectively, developers must embrace innovative, future-proof approaches. This is where frameworks like the Paris Agreement come into play, providing the global blueprint needed to guide our efforts.

The Paris Agreement and Real Estate

The Paris Agreement has far-reaching implications for the real estate industry. As climate action becomes increasingly urgent, the sector is undergoing a profound transformation. Regulatory frameworks such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are pushing businesses to be more transparent and accountable. This has elevated Paris Proof and CRREM certifications from “nice-to-have” accolades to “must-have” credentials for any development aiming to be financially responsible and sustainable.

Why Paris Proof and CRREM Matter:

  1. Future-Proofing Assets: Aligning developments with the goals of the Paris Agreement ensures resilience against regulatory and market changes.
  2. Financial Responsibility: Investors and stakeholders now demand buildings that meet stringent sustainability criteria, making these certifications essential for attracting capital.
  3. Operational Efficiency: Sustainable design and operation reduce energy consumption, lower costs, and increase asset value over time.

Sustainability is Not Optional

The climate crisis is not a distant threat; it’s here and now. As developers, we have an obligation to lead the charge in creating buildings and communities that support a sustainable future. This means embracing cutting-edge technologies, adhering to rigorous sustainability standards, and never losing sight of the triple bottom line: People, Planet, and Profit.

For me, this mission is personal. It’s about leaving behind a legacy that my children and future generations can be proud of. The Paris Agreement is more than a policy—it’s a lifeline. By aligning our actions with its goals, we can build a world that thrives economically while preserving the environmental and social foundations that make prosperity possible.

The road ahead requires commitment, collaboration, and innovation. But as someone who has witnessed the transformative power of education and purpose, I firmly believe that sustainability is not just the right path; it’s the only path.
